What is Google Consent Mode v2?

Google Consent Mode is a framework that lets you adjust how Google tags behave based on user consent. Version 2 (required from March 2024) adds new consent types for ad personalization and user data. CookieFrame automatically implements v2 requirements.

Do I need to modify my existing gtag setup?

No! The GTM template handles all gtag consent updates automatically. Your existing Google Analytics and Google Ads tags continue working. They just respect consent now.

How does category mapping work?

CookieFrame's necessary category maps to security_storage. Analytics maps to analytics_storage. Marketing maps to ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization. Preferences maps to functionality_storage, personalization_storage. All automatic, customizable if needed.

Will this affect my Google Analytics data?

Yes, in a good way. When analytics consent is denied, GA4 uses cookieless pings to model conversions while respecting user privacy. You get better privacy compliance without losing all measurement capability.

Is this required for compliance?

If you use Google Analytics or Google Ads in the EU, yes. Google requires Consent Mode v2 for compliance. Without it, you can't legally use Google tags in the EU without full consent.

Can I use this without Google Tag Manager?

The GTM template is the easiest method, but you can also integrate via direct gtag calls or our JavaScript API. GTM is recommended for simplicity.
